Curriculum Options:
Odysseyware (3rd-12th)
This curriculum is an almost completely Internet based challenging curriculum beginning at the third grade level. Daily lessons are presented with online textbook reading, video clips, audio clips, animated examples and games, pictures, and links to access even more. Students complete their daily assignments by answering questions about the lessons, writing reports and stories, completing projects or experiments, and taking assessments to measure what they have learned through each unit of study.
Students can access the program anytime and anywhere they have access to the Internet. This provides a great deal of flexibility in learning schedules. For example, students who might need additional time to complete a particular assignment can take the time they need to do well before they begin in the next subject for the day. Students won't be rushed, or slowed down, due to other students or a bell ringing to move to the next class. Students complete their daily assignments online and are given feedback and guidance from their HVA teachers as needed. Students are also encouraged to work on their assignments and be available during the hours the teachers are working. Student should be logged in on Skype during the hours their teachers are working to be able to communicate with them as needed throughout the school day while working on their assignments. Students should be ready to begin the school day by 8:30 am each scheduled school day. Note that students need to continue to work on their lessons during the periods their teachers are available.
The communication between the school staff and the family is important. Current research suggests that parental involvement is one of the key components to a student’s academic achievement. We have found this to be especially true for virtual students. It is important for the parents to be involved and be aware of what their child is completing each day in OW so the student stays on schedule and continues to make progress. The most successful students are the ones that are held accountable at home each day with parents regularly checking the student's OW due date progress. It is also vital for parents to keep in regular communication with the HVA staff by regularly checking email messages, and also utilizing Skype when needed.
